Jennifer Love Hewitt Ghost Lawsuit Busted

Los Angeles - Jennifer Love Hewitt has exorcised her legal demons.

The actress' former management firm has dropped a lawsuit alleging she never turned over an agreed-upon 10-percent commission for helping her secure her starring role on Ghost Whisperer, according to a request for dismissal filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

An attorney for Handprint Entertainment Inc. refused to comment on why her client opted to end the fight, saying the paperwork spoke for itself. The request was filed "with prejudice," meaning the plaintiff has agreed not to pursue the matter in the future.

According to Handprint's complaint, which was filed in April 2007, Hewitt hooked up with the company in 2002 and left in 2005, the year Ghost Whisperer premiered.

While the CBS drama, now entering its fourth season, brought the former Party of Five sixth wheel back "to national prominence as a TV star," Handprint claimed that she reneged on an oral agreement to turn over 10 percent of her earnings.

The firm had asked for at least $375,000 in damages.

Anne Hathaway is not only getting smart, she's apparently wising up.

Reports are ramping up that the actress has split from her scandal-prone boyfriend of the past four years, Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, after she was solo on the red carpet at Monday's Los Angeles premiere of her new movie, Get Smart.

Hathaway's publicist, Stephen Huvane, remained mum about reports in People, the New York Daily News and British tabs that the actress put the brakes on the relationship over the weekend.

"We won't be commenting on tabloid reports about Anne's personal life," he told E! News.

Those not on her payroll, however, weren't quite as tight-lipped.

"There's been a breakup, God willing it's forever," a source close to the Hathaway family told E! News, adding that the actress' father, lawyer Gerald, has not exactly been a cheerleader for the relationship.

The U.K.'s Mail on Sunday was the first to suggest Hathaway pulled the plug, saying the 25-year-old did the dumping "because of the effects [Follieri's] controversial business dealings could have on her career."

As it is, the 29-year-old Follieri has been making the wrong kind of headlines of late.

Last week, it was revealed that the entrepreneur was under investigation by the New York State Attorney General after it was discovered the state had no record of the requisite IRS tax disclosure forms for his Follieri Foundation, which Hathaway once served on the board of directors for.

He also made headlines in April, when he was arrested for allegedly bouncing a $215,000 check to an associate and failing to pay his public relations company.

Needless to say, it was not the best PR move.

Mars lander finds bits of ice, scientists say

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Scientists believe that NASA's Phoenix Mars lander exposed bits of ice while recently digging a trench in the soil of the Martian arctic, the mission's principal investigator said Thursday.

Crumbs of bright material initially photographed in the trench later vanished, meaning they must have been frozen water that vaporized after being exposed, said Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, in a statement.

"These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice," Smith said.

Phoenix Mars is studying whether the arctic region of the Red Planet could be habitable.

The probe is using its robotic arm to dig up soil samples, and scientists hope it will find frozen water.

However, an initial soil sample heated in a science instrument failed to yield evidence of water.

The bright material was seen in the bottom of a trench dubbed Dodo-Goldilocks that Phoenix enlarged on June 15.

Several of the bright crumbs were gone when the spacecraft looked into the trench again early Thursday, NASA said.

Phoenix's arm, meanwhile, encountered a hard surface while digging another trench Thursday and scientists were hopeful of uncovering an icy layer, the space agency said. That trench is called Snow White 2.

The arm went into a "holding position" after three attempts to dig further, which is expected when it the reaches a hard surface, NASA said.

Scientists have been using names from fairy tales and mythology to designate geologic features around Phoenix and the trenches it has been digging.

In 2002, the orbiting Mars Odyssey detected hints of a vast store of ice below the surface of Mars' polar regions. The arctic terrain where Phoenix touched down has polygon shapes in the ground similar to those found in Earth's permafrost regions. The patterns on Earth are caused by seasonal expansion and shrinking of underground ice.

Engineers also have prepared a software patch to send up to Phoenix to fix a problem that surfaced Tuesday in the use of its flash memory.

NASA said that because Phoenix generated a large amount of duplicative file-maintenance data that day, the mission team has been avoiding storing science data in the flash memory and is instead transmitting it to Earth at the end of each day.

"We now understand what happened, and we can fix it with a software patch," said Barry Goldstein, the Phoenix project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

Phoenix landed near Mars' north pole May 25. The $420 million mission is planned to last 90 days.

That settles it. Kevin Federline is to receive sole custody of his children with troubled singer Britney Spears in a new agreement expected to get court approval on Friday, the "PopoZao" rapper's lawyer has revealed.

Mark Vincent Kaplan, Federline's attorney, told E! News that the former couple have signed the agreement, which gives the aspiring rapper legal and physical custody of sons Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1. Spears will continued to have visitation rights.

"The case has been settled," Kaplan said. "The court still has to approve it." Both camps are due in court on Friday.

The agreement means the case won't go to court.

"As of this evening there is a fully executed deal memo ... All the issues that would have been addressed at trial have been settled," Kaplan told E! News. "Can't speak to the exact terms of the deal. Orders in place ... will stay in place."

It's unclear if Spears will receive increased visitation with her kids. She currently enjoys two visits and one overnight per week. A source close to Spears told PEOPLE that the singer will likely get increased visitation right over time.

"Until the kids turn 18, we can expect in years to come that Britney and Kevin will be back in court," says L.A. family lawyer Lynn Soodik, who is not involved with the case. "Britney will have a better chance of winning more custody once she regains her health. This is just the end of Round One."

The obstetrician who delivered the twins, Dr. Michel Sussmann, told The Associated Press that the actress, the babies and Jolie's partner, actor Brad Pitt, "are doing marvelously well."

Sussmann said Jolie gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Cesarean section on Saturday night.
